Set subjects - 2017
March 2017 - Two things / Twee dinge
One of the rules of photography is not to have even numbers in your image – or is it?
Use your imagination to prove that two things can be as interesting as 3 or 5.
April 2017 - Lines and Curves / Lyne en kurwes
Your image must contain both straight lines AND curves. It can be architectural, natural or orchestrated in a studio. Try to include many straight lines and curves to increase the overall effect of the lines and curves.
Limitations: None.
May 2017 - Kitchen Utensils / Kombuisgoed
Portray Kitchen utensils like they belong in a home styling or decor magazine. Use lighting to cast shadows or reflectors to provide subtle lighting. Use closely cropped shots to abstract the collection of items. Try and avoid including food or preparation of food in the image. It is about the utensils
June 2017 – Feet / Voete
This one is Feet only. It could be one foot, two feet or a fleet of feet. Or it could be big feet, small feet or a combination of both. Make it interesting and more than just a “record shot” of feet. Clever use of feet could be one step ahead of ugly or smelly feet. This challenge will be quite a feat for some.
July 2017 - Bokeh.
Bokeh – The Japanese word for blur, typically depicted by an out-of-focus background in the image. Primary subject in the image may be anything you wish to photograph but must include bokeh in the background and/or foreground. Attempt to achieve “good” bokeh where the out-of-focus edges are smooth. Bokeh is created by a wide open aperture in camera or custom-shaped aperture for the more adventurous. The bokeh does not need to relate to the in-focus primary subject but may be the case if you so desire (refer to example below with hearts).
Aug 2017 - Street Photography.
Street photography is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in predominantly candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other settings. The candid nature of the shot is the challenge; else a posed shot with permission and model release forms is required. The image could reflect the frailty, complexity or obscurity of everyday life. It could also uncover the comedy we don’t always see in an otherwise mundane situation.
Sep 2017 - Frame It.
Create a frame within the image using elements of the image to frame another part of the image. Attempt to redirect the viewer’s attention into the frame. Exercise your creativity to maximise the effect of the inner frame. Limitations: Frame must be part of image and not an added border.
Oct 2017 - Droplets.
Droplets of liquid in any form; water, milk, paint, rain, dew drops, dripping taps or fountains are just a few examples. It can be any single liquid or combination of liquids. It can be the droplets on their own or in conjunction with other objects, but the droplets must be the dominant component of the image. Technical executions of dripping liquid impact points are welcome. Think out of the box.
Nov 2017 – Young / old
The challenge is to capture something that depicts both young and old. It could be people, vehicles, architecture and many more.
Jan 2018 – Movement
Motion blur is frequently employed in sports photography (particularly motor sports) to convey a sense of speed. To achieve this effect it is necessary to use a slow shutter speed and pan the lens of the camera in time with the motion of the object.  It could also be a bird in flight, or someone jogging or cycling. Make sure you have a background that can add to the sense of movement.
Feb 2018 – Black & white photography
Black and white photography offers a unique perspective on many subjects. Removing colour brings out the hidden details, textures, and shapes. Focus on the following 5 points to make your B & W image stand out:

  1. Shape and form
  2. Contrast
  3. Pattern
  4. Texture
  5. Lighting
